Stop Drop Selfie For MS

So it’s Sunday night. I’m currently in bed trying to pick a classic Christmas movie to fall asleep to. I’m trying to get my mind off of an appointment I have tomorrow morning. I have my usual MRI appointment and I’m sure I can speak for some MSers out there when I say this but I absolutely HATE them! I get claustrophobic and feel as if I’m trapped in a small box. The loud noises from the giant magnet makes it worse. I have to get MRI’s done every 6 months but I don’t think I will ever get used to it. They totally suck but this is part of my life and I just have to suck it up and put my big girl pants on.

But you know what’s giving me extra strength for tomorrow’s appointment? It’s the amount of support that I’m getting. Of course it’s coming from my family and friends, but this entire week I’ve been overjoyed by the amount of selfies trending on Instagram and Twitter. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, check out my post on the #StopDropSelfieForMS campaign. To keep it short and simple, it’s a campaign aimed at raising awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. If nominated, you have to stop, drop what you’re doing and take a selfie. Then you must upload it to your social medias, include the #StopDropSelfieForMS hashtag and nominate others to get involved as well.

Instagram #StopDropSelfieForMS

There are thousands and thousands of selfies coming from all over the world including Canada, United States, South Africa, United Kingdom, France, Argentina, Australia and many more. I see selfies everywhere! What’s even more overwhelming is that people are including in their captions that they now know what MS is. This is what means the most to us MSers. We want people to be aware of the disease. 2.5 million people worldwide have it and barely anyone knows exactly what it is. What’s also pretty awesome is that people are donating which is just as important as raising awareness.

Some selfie takers are confusing the hashtag. The original hashtag is #StopDropSelfieForMS but I’ve noticed they forgot the most important part – “ForMS” – as they began to use #StopDropSelfie or #StopDropAndSelfie. It can be frustrating to see that. I mean, girls take selfies all the time. I’m sure they don’t need a challenge/campaign to do that! But at the same time, people are noticing that it’s for MS, and they are including that. So it doesn’t matter to me. It still means a lot and they are still recognizing that there is an actual message behind the selfie.

It’s just amazing. Strangers are indirectly supporting me and all those who suffer from MS brings and it literally brings me to happy tears. We are finally getting our voices heard. Besides a cure, that’s all we ever wanted – people to be aware. THANK YOU to everyone who has participated and thank you for giving me the strength for my MRI tomorrow.

Please take one minute to just read up on Multiple Sclerosis and its effects on patients. If you’d like to donate please visit the MS Society of Canada or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

KEEP THE SELFIES COMING!
