Working From Home Isn’t As Easy As You Think It Is

Think working from home is a great option for you? Okay, I must admit, I LOVE working from home. But it’s not as easy as you think. “You got the life” – is what I hear from my friends and family all the time, but little do they know, there comes challenges. It definitely has it’s perks but working from an office or working from your home is still WORK.

Isolation

It’s so nice to have some peace and quiet. However, you are the only person around all day (unless you have someone at home with you). You don’t have the outside pressure of someone telling you what needs to be done and you don’t get to socialize with your coworkers. I try to change things up a bit and go to my nearest coffee shop to get out for a day.

What Your Boss Doesn’t See

You don’t have a regular 9 – 5 job, so this means you can get up right in your pjs, turn on the coffee pot, and start work as you please. There’s two options here: you either wake up at a decent time and stop work when you are finished, OR, you are putting in extra hours – which is not necessarily a bad thing – but your boss will not know that you are putting in the extra effort. So, if your boss may be hard on you.

Distractions

Yes, there are many distractions in an office. But I have to say there are WAY MORE distractions when you are in the comfort of your own home. There’s dishes in the sink? They need to be cleaned. Your cat wants some attention? Well, you need to give it some love. You’re hungry? Well turn on the stove/oven and get to cooking. You’re favourite show is on? You get the point. Your friends know you work from home so why wouldn’t they come by to chit-chat. Just a tip, if you’re easily derailed, you’ll have to be diligent if you want to work from home.

Office-Home, Home-Office

You can’t escape your workplace! You are surrounded by those four walls, day in-day out, and work will always be in your face. This can have an effect on your sanity. Do you know how many coffee/wine nights I have to have with the girls just to escape?

People Don’t Take You Seriously

Those judgmental looks you get from others when you tell them you work from home? Welcome to my life. People look at me as if I sit back and watch Facebook videos all day. If you’re a sensitive person, working from home may not be the best option for you.

It may not seem all that bad BUT it is not easy. I would much rather work from home than an office, but it still has it’s everyday challenges. What about you? Do you work from home? What are some of the con’s you have noticed? Do you have anything else to add to this list? Drop a comment below 🙂
